Hardness

Hardness is the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water. There are two kinds of hardness:

Temporary Hardness: Ca and Mg bicarbonates (precipitate minerals upon heating)

Permanent Hardness: Ca and Mg sulfates or chlorides (dissolve with sodium)

Often, hardness is described in degrees. There are several kinds of degrees:
1 German degree (°dH) = 17.86 ppm
1 American degree = 17.10 ppm
1 English degree (°e) = 14.29 ppm
1 French degree (°F) = 10.00 ppm
